Buyers Guide Are Handmade Charcuterie Boards Worth It —Behind The Scenes | Bonobuilt
Eric BonoIf you've ever looked at a handmade hardwood charcuterie board and wondered whether it’s really worth the cost compared to something mass-produced, you’re not alone.
At first glance, a board is just a board. But once you understand the difference between a factory-made product and a handcrafted one, the value becomes much clearer.
At Bonobuilt, every charcuterie board is made by hand in my workshop in Visalia, California using carefully selected hardwood sourced from Paso Robles. There’s no mass production, no shortcuts, and no synthetic materials—just solid hardwood, thoughtful design, and a process refined over time.
Here’s what actually goes into making a handcrafted wooden charcuterie board.
It Starts With the Wood
Not all wood is suitable for charcuterie boards. The species, grain structure, and quality of the lumber all play a role in how the board looks, feels, and performs over time.
I source my lumber from Paso Robles, working with a trusted supplier so I can carefully select boards with the right grain, color, and character before they ever enter my shop.
Most Bonobuilt charcuterie boards are made from walnut or maple, two hardwoods that offer both durability and natural beauty.
Walnut is rich and dark, with deep chocolate tones and flowing grain patterns that make every board unique. It has a warmth and elegance that instantly elevates any table setting.
Maple, on the other hand, is bright, clean, and refined. Its tight grain structure creates an exceptionally smooth surface and gives it a timeless, minimalist look.
Choosing the right piece of wood is one of the most important steps in the entire process. Even within the same species, every board is different. I take the time to find pieces with character and balance so that each finished board feels intentional and visually striking.
Cutting and Shaping the Board
Once the wood is selected, it’s time to shape it.
Using a table saw and band saw, I break down the lumber and cut each board into one of Bonobuilt’s core forms:
- Rectangular boards for versatility and classic presentation
- Circular boards that create a striking centerpiece
- Oblong boards with an elongated silhouette that fits beautifully on a dining table or kitchen island
Some boards also include handles, which are shaped and refined so they feel natural and comfortable in the hand.
My design philosophy is simple: clean, timeless forms that highlight the natural beauty of the wood rather than distracting from it.
The Step That Makes the Biggest Difference: Sanding
If you ask most woodworkers what separates an average board from a great one, the answer is almost always the same: sanding.
This stage takes the most time, and it’s where the transformation really happens.
Each board is sanded through multiple stages, gradually refining the surface until it becomes incredibly smooth. The process continues all the way up to 400 grit, creating a silky finish that feels soft and refined when you run your hand across it.
Edges are rounded over so they feel comfortable to hold, and every surface is carefully worked until the board reflects light evenly and feels balanced in the hand.
Sanding isn’t glamorous work—but it’s one of the biggest factors that separates handcrafted boards from factory-made ones.
Finishing With Food-Safe Protection
Because charcuterie boards come into direct contact with food, the finish matters just as much as the craftsmanship.
Every Bonobuilt board is treated with a food-grade mineral oil and beeswax finish.
The mineral oil penetrates deep into the wood fibers, conditioning the board from the inside and helping prevent it from drying out over time.
The beeswax adds a soft, natural luster while creating a light protective barrier that helps resist moisture and staining.
After the oil is applied, the board is allowed to soak so the wood can fully absorb it. The excess is then wiped away, leaving behind a finish that feels smooth, natural, and ready for real use.
Solid Hardwood — No Shortcuts
Many inexpensive boards are made using plywood cores, veneers, or factory coatings designed for speed and mass production.
Bonobuilt boards are different.
Every board is made from solid hardwood, shaped and finished by hand in my shop in Visalia. There are no veneers, no plywood cores, and no synthetic finishes—just durable hardwood designed to last for years with proper care.
That difference is one of the main reasons handmade boards cost more, and why many people find they’re worth the investment.
How Long Does It Take to Make One?
Depending on the size and style, a single Bonobuilt charcuterie board typically takes two to four hours of hands-on work from start to finish.
That includes selecting the wood, cutting the shape, sanding through multiple stages, rounding edges, and applying the final food-safe finish.
It’s not the fastest way to produce a board—but it’s the process that allows me to stand behind every piece I make.
Who Are Handmade Charcuterie Boards For?
A handcrafted charcuterie board isn’t just a serving surface—it becomes part of the experience.
They’re perfect for:
- Hosting gatherings with friends and family
- Creating beautiful food presentations
- Thoughtful gifts for weddings or houswarmings
- Anyone who appreciates well-made, lasting objects in their home
Because of their simple, timeless design, wooden charcuterie boards fit effortlessly into both modern and traditional kitchens.
Caring for Your Board
Like any natural wood product, charcuterie boards benefit from occasional maintenance.
Reapplying a light coat of food-safe mineral oil helps keep the wood conditioned and prevents it from drying out.

Handmade vs Mass-Produced Charcuterie Boards
At a glance, many charcuterie boards may look similar. But the way they’re made can be very different.
Here are a few key differences between handmade boards and factory-produced alternatives.
Materials
Many mass-produced boards use bamboo, veneers, or plywood cores designed to keep costs low and production fast.
Bonobuilt boards are made from solid hardwood, primarily walnut and maple, which are known for their durability and natural beauty.
Craftsmanship
Factory boards are produced in large batches using automated processes.
Handmade boards are shaped, sanded, and finished individually. This allows more attention to detail, smoother surfaces, and more balanced proportions.
Longevity
Lower-cost boards often wear out faster, especially if they use thin materials or composite construction.
Solid hardwood boards, when cared for properly, can last for many years and often develop more character over time.
Uniqueness
Because wood grain varies naturally, no two handmade boards are exactly alike.
Each Bonobuilt board has its own grain pattern and character, making it a one-of-a-kind piece.
So — Are Handmade Charcuterie Boards Worth It?
For people who value craftsmanship, natural materials, and objects built to last, the answer is usually yes.
A handmade board isn’t just about serving food—it’s about the experience of gathering around something thoughtfully made.
Every Bonobuilt board is crafted with that idea in mind.
